The name Hillman may be reminiscent of a fictional college during a beloved chapter of American television that captured a moment of great cultural nostalgia, a time when Black excellence was gaining full and unapologetic prominence across American society. That fictional college resonated because it reflected something real: the hunger, the brilliance, and the boundless potential of a people who had always been more than the world gave them credit for.
The Hillman Institute carries that same spirit forward. The belief that Black intellectual life is worth investing in. That leadership developed in community is leadership that lasts. That excellence, when given the right environment, is inevitable.

Most professional environments were designed around a narrow set of experiences. The unwritten rules, the cultural codes, the networks that open doors — they were built by and for a specific kind of person, and that person was rarely Black.

The environmental crises facing Black communities today are not accidents. They are the documented outcomes of deliberate policy decisions, systemic disinvestment, and economic structures that extracted wealth from Black neighborhoods while depositing the byproducts of industry into them.
Federal mortgage policy systematically denied Black communities access to capital, preventing investment in housing, trees, parks, and businesses. The physical environment of Black neighborhoods was not allowed to sustain itself. The effects are still measurable today in air quality and tree canopy data.
Interstate highways were deliberately routed through thriving Black commercial districts — from Tulsa's Greenwood to Durham's Black Wall Street to the Rondo neighborhood in St. Paul. These were engineering decisions made by planners who did not consider Black lives as communities worth preserving.
A landmark 1987 study confirmed race was the single most significant factor in determining where hazardous waste facilities were sited. By the 1990s, over half of all Black and Latino Americans lived in communities with uncontrolled toxic waste sites.
Manufacturing left American cities and left behind contaminated brownfields — concentrated in Black communities. Water infrastructure was allowed to age and fail, made tragically visible in Flint, Michigan, where a majority-Black city was poisoned by lead-contaminated water for years.
Communities least responsible for carbon emissions bear the greatest consequences. Urban heat islands, formed partly by the absence of tree canopy caused by redlining, mean Black neighborhoods run measurably hotter. Every climate projection shows communities of color will suffer first and most.
Each course was developed entirely by The Hillman Institute's Executive Leadership Institute — grounded in professional-level rigor and designed through the lens of Black community leadership and environmental justice.
This foundational course examines what sustainability truly means when applied to historically underinvested communities — not just environmental management, but the long-term well-being of people, economies, and ecosystems. Students learn to analyze systemic root causes of environmental inequality and develop sustainability strategies aligned with community economic goals.
Infrastructure is not neutral. This course uses systems theory to teach students how to plan, advocate for, and implement infrastructure improvements in underserved communities — from roads and water systems to energy grids and green space.
Life Cycle Assessment is the professional methodology for tracing environmental impact from extraction to disposal. Students learn to apply LCA as a decision-making tool for community projects, small businesses, and neighborhood infrastructure — a practical instrument of power and accountability.
The circular economy is both an environmental and economic model. Applied with intention in Black communities, it becomes a framework for recirculating dollars, reducing waste, creating local jobs, and building businesses that keep wealth circulating where it is needed most.
Trillions of dollars are shifting from fossil fuels to renewables — and the communities that position themselves to capture a share will build generational wealth. This course teaches how to evaluate energy systems, analyze technology trajectories, and develop community-level clean energy strategies.

These Terms of Service ("Terms") constitute a legally binding agreement between you ("Participant," "you," or "your") and The Hillman Institute, LLC ("Hillman Institute," "we," "us," or "our"). By accessing our website, submitting an application, or enrolling in any program, you agree to be bound by these Terms. Please read them carefully.
The Hillman Institute is a professional continuing education institution organized as a for-profit limited liability company. We offer certificate programs in leadership, technology, business, community development, and healthcare.
We are not an accredited degree-granting institution. Hillman Institute certificates are professional development credentials and do not constitute academic degrees. We make no representation that our certificates satisfy requirements for any professional license, academic credit transfer, or government certification.
Enrollment is confirmed upon receipt of full payment and acceptance of your application. All fees are stated in U.S. dollars. Payment is processed through our third-party payment processor (Stripe) and is subject to their terms of service.
Pricing is subject to change without notice. The price in effect at the time of your enrollment confirmation governs your enrollment.
Refund requests must be submitted in writing to admissions@hillmaninstitute.org. Refunds are processed within 10 business days.
All course content, curriculum, materials, videos, assessments, and resources provided through Hillman Institute programs are the exclusive intellectual property of The Hillman Institute, LLC, or are used under license. All rights reserved.
You are granted a limited, non-exclusive, non-transferable license to access and use course materials solely for your personal educational purposes during your enrollment period.
You may not reproduce, distribute, sell, sublicense, publicly display, or create derivative works from any course content without prior written permission from The Hillman Institute.
As a Hillman Institute participant, you agree to:
A Hillman Institute Certificate of Completion is awarded upon satisfactory completion of all required program modules and assessments, as determined by The Hillman Institute in its sole discretion.
Hillman Institute reserves the right to withhold or revoke a certificate if a participant is found to have violated these Terms, engaged in academic dishonesty, or misrepresented information in their application.
The Hillman Institute reserves the right to modify, update, or discontinue any program, course content, instructor assignment, schedule, or pricing at any time. We will provide reasonable notice of material changes to enrolled participants. In the event a program is discontinued before your completion, we will offer a pro-rated refund or transfer credit.
The Hillman Institute reserves the right to suspend or terminate your enrollment, without refund, if you violate these Terms, engage in conduct harmful to other participants or staff, commit academic dishonesty, or misrepresent information in your application.
You may withdraw from a program at any time, subject to our Refund Policy in Section 4 above.
THE HILLMAN INSTITUTE PROVIDES ALL PROGRAMS, CONTENT, AND SERVICES "AS IS" AND "AS AVAILABLE" WITHOUT WARRANTIES OF ANY KIND, EXPRESS OR IMPLIED.
We do not guarantee any specific employment outcome, salary increase, promotion, or career result from completing a Hillman Institute program. Individual results will vary based on many factors outside our control.
TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMITTED BY APPLICABLE LAW, THE HILLMAN INSTITUTE SHALL NOT BE LIABLE FOR ANY INDIRECT, INCIDENTAL, SPECIAL, CONSEQUENTIAL, OR PUNITIVE DAMAGES ARISING FROM YOUR USE OF OUR PROGRAMS OR SERVICES.
Our total liability to you for any claim arising from these Terms or your enrollment shall not exceed the total amount paid by you for the specific program at issue in the twelve (12) months preceding the claim.
You agree to indemnify, defend, and hold harmless The Hillman Institute, LLC, its officers, members, employees, instructors, and agents from any claims, damages, losses, costs, and expenses (including reasonable attorneys' fees) arising from your violation of these Terms, your misuse of our programs or services, or your infringement of any third-party rights.
These Terms are governed by the laws of the State of California, without regard to conflict of law principles.
Any dispute arising from these Terms or your enrollment that cannot be resolved informally shall be submitted to binding arbitration under the rules of the American Arbitration Association (AAA), conducted in San Francisco, California. Each party shall bear its own costs unless the arbitrator determines otherwise.
You waive any right to participate in a class action lawsuit or class-wide arbitration against The Hillman Institute.
If any provision of these Terms is found to be invalid or unenforceable, the remaining provisions shall continue in full force and effect.
These Terms, together with our Privacy Policy, constitute the entire agreement between you and The Hillman Institute with respect to your use of our programs and services and supersede all prior agreements.
We may update these Terms from time to time. When we make material changes, we will notify enrolled participants by email and update the "Last Updated" date above. Your continued enrollment after notice of changes constitutes acceptance of the updated Terms.
